What to Expect at Bansko Nomad Fest 2025, from who went twice
Bansko Nomad Fest 2025 is a week-long celebration of the digital nomad lifestyle set in the picturesque mountain town of Bansko, Bulgaria. Every summer, hundreds of remote workers, entrepreneurs, and freelancers converge here to connect, learn, and play. In 2024 the fest drew more than 700 nomads, making it the largest nomad festival in the world – and 2025 promises to be even bigger, aiming for nearly 1000 participants. This year it will happen from June 22nd to 29th.
It’s clearly not a business-card kind of conference: it’s an experience for freedom-seeking, community-first, and adventure-prone kind of people. From inspiring talks to outdoor excursions and mindful wellness sessions, Bansko Nomad Fest offers something for every kind of nomad.
We personally attended the event for the last two years, so we gathered all our notes and experiences to put together this comprehensive guide. Bansko Nomad Fest is a very rich experience and it’s not a secret that it can be overwhelming for first-timers. We promise that you will feel on top of everything and ready to have exciting times this week!

Getting to Bansko, Bulgaria ✈️🇧🇬🚍
Getting to Bansko is easier than you might think, even if it feels like an offbeat destination. The journey often starts with flying into Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital. Sofia Airport (SOF) is well-connected to major European cities – for example, direct flights from London take just about 3 hours. From Sofia, Bansko is roughly 160 km south (about a 2 to 3-hour trip by road). Most nomads fly to Sofia then take a bus or taxi van to Bansko.
There are comfortable coach buses multiple times a day from Sofia’s bus stations, costing only around €8-€15. If you prefer more freedom, you can rent a car and drive the scenic route through mountains (the roads are decent and the views are great). Many attendees also coordinate in advance in the event chat on Telegram to share rides or group shuttles – by the time you land in Sofia, you might already have new friends to carpool with!
Once on the road, expect a beautiful drive past rural villages and rising peaks. Bansko itself is tucked at the foot of the Pirin Mountains at ~925m elevation. Pro tip: If you’re coming from elsewhere in the Balkans, you could also drive from Greece (Thessaloniki) or take a train to Blagoevgrad and bus/taxi from there. But Sofia remains the most straightforward gateway. However you arrive, the moment you see Bansko’s red roofs and alpine backdrop, you’ll feel the excitement set in – you’re almost “home” for the next week!
Where to Stay in Bansko 🏠
One of the charms of Bansko Nomad Fest is that the town is small and walkable: you’ll bump into fellow nomads in cafes, on the streets, everywhere. The main square and Old Town area is the heart of the action, with three main venues all close to each other: the Main Stage (Nikola Vaptsarov Community Center), Cinema Stage (Bansko Visitor Information Centre), and The Park (City Park).
Staying close to the square means you’re never more than a few minutes from a talk, workshop, or impromptu meetup. Plus, you could go back home for just a 30 minutes break and “me-time” in between the small gaps in the program.
Fortunately, Bansko has ample accommodation options for every budget, from cozy guesthouses to modern hotels and coliving spaces. Why so in a small town? Because it’s a popular winter ski destination, so during summer it never gets as full as during the peak winter season.
Popular Accommodation Options (Near Main Square):
Accommodation | Style | Price (approx.) | Highlights & Location |
---|---|---|---|
Sheraton Bansko (4★ Hotel) – “Gold Package” | Premium Hotel (Fest Partner) | €1015 all inclusive | Ultimate convenience: the official fest hotel, steps from venues, packed with nomads for networking. Includes 7 nights stay and your festival pass in one package – just roll out of bed and into the morning keynote! |
CoLiving Bansko (Coworking Bansko Houses) | Coliving Apartments | from €90/night | Community vibe: shared apartments run by Coworking Bansko, where you live with fellow nomads. Walking distance to the square. |
Hotel Bojur & Bojurland (3★) | Hotel & Apartments | from €28/night | Budget-friendly hotel/aparthotel close to the center. Clean rooms, fast Wi-Fi, and even one and two-bedroom apartments (great for groups). |
Gardenia Hotel (4★ Spa Hotel) | Hotel & Spa | from €42/night | Relaxation plus: a nicer hotel featuring a spa and even a pool. It’s near the city park (one of the fest venues), so you can go from a conference talk to a sauna session in minutes. |
Boyanovi Guest House | Guesthouse/B&B | from ~€21/night | Homely and central: a small family-run hotel (with an attached pizzeria!) right in Old Town. Simple, cozy rooms and a 5-minute walk to the main bus station. |
Hotel Elitsa (3★) | Budget Hotel | from ~€24/night | No-frills comfort: another affordable option very close to the square. Travelers praise its friendly owners and mountain views from some rooms. |
Mamin Kolio (2★) | Chalet Hotel | from ~56/night | A beautiful garden and patio in a cozy family owned hotel. You will feel like at home, and you can cowork from the internal garden. Just 5 minutes away from the main stage. |
(Prices are examples from past info – always double-check current rates and fest discounts.)
The first year we stayed closer to the gondola in the upper part of town and it took 20-30 minutes to walk up or downhill. Totally doable and you can always be amazed by the surrounding mountains, but less convenient for a quick stop-and-go during the day. So the past year we decided year to stay in a charming family-owned hotel chalet with a lovely patio and garden, Mamin Kolio, but for this year it’s already fully booked (maybe we spread the word too much already 🤫).
Staying near the main square means you can pop back to your room anytime — whether to grab a jacket for the evening party or to take a quick power nap after an intense workshop.
Wherever you stay, you’ll be surrounded by nomads, and that energy is contagious. Many hotels in Bansko are familiar with the fest and its attendees, so don’t be surprised if they greet you with “Oh, you’re here for Nomad Fest!” and a smile. The community feeling extends into every aspect of your stay. 🏡💚
Adventure & Outdoor Activities in Bansko 🎢🏔️
One thing that sets Bansko Nomad Fest apart is the amazing mix of adventure activities woven into the week. Each afternoon, after the talks and workshops, nomads head out to play in Bansko’s mountain paradise. If you love the outdoors and a shot of adrenaline, you’re in for a treat! Here are three adventure activities to look forward to (and yes, we tried ALL of them and they’re awesome):
- 1. Quad Biking (ATV) in the Mountains: Feel the rush as you rev up an ATV and ride through dirt trails, meadows and foothills with the Pirin peaks in the background. No experience with ATV is needed, the guides are competent and safety comes before all.
Quad biking tours are a hit at the fest – imagine a convoy of nomads on four-wheelers, laughing through their helmets as they splash through mud puddles and conquer bumpy.
In fact, one important note: BOOK IT early through the fest app, as they go sold out already in the first 1-2 days.
Why? The trails around Bansko offer gorgeous scenery: by the end, you’ll be dusty, grinning ear to ear, and bonded with your fellow riders over the shared adventure.
We still have vivid memories from last year: the high grass meadows caressed by the gentle wind, drinking the freezing fresh water of a hidden spring, and the exhilarating passages within trees an inch from your face. - 2. Mountain Biking & E-Bike Tours: For those who prefer two wheels, join a mountain biking or e-biking trip. Bansko’s surrounding area has both gentle routes and challenging downhill tracks. With an e-bike, even uphill climbs feel doable – you can explore higher elevations for panoramic views without completely exhausting yourself. In past fests, group rides have gone out to panoramic picnic spots and hidden.
Feel the sun on your face and wind in your hair as you pedal past grazing sheep and wildflowers. Whether you’re an avid cyclist or a casual rider, this is a fun way to get your blood pumping and soak up nature. (Helmets and e-bikes can be rented on the spot – easy!) - 3. Airsoft Battles in the Woods: Ever wanted to play out a friendly “battle” in a forest and abandoned factory? Airsoft (Softair) games are on the activity menu too, and they’re insanely fun. Picture yourself into this: you’re geared up with a mock rifle that shoots tiny pellets, strategizing with a team of nomads behind trees and old industrial machineries. It’s like paintball, but with realistic toy guns – and it will get your adrenaline going.
In 2023 we attended a long game of Airsoft: first we had a round of range shooting, to calibrate our hand-eye coordination and learn how to use the rifles safely. Then we’ve split in two groups and after a short strategy talk, we were ready to duck, dive, and laugh through the whole skirmish. No combat experience required – it’s all in good fun and safety gear is provided. It’s a fantastic ice-breaker activity as well; nothing builds camaraderie like teaming up for a “mission” and then recounting all the near-misses over drinks afterward!

Of course, that’s not all. Bansko’s got hundreds of activities on tap, many included as free or low-cost options during Nomad Fest. You could find yourself white-water rafting on a roaring river, horseback riding through rural villages, or rock climbing on local.
Basically it’s an all-terrain playground for grown ups!
More mellow options include guided hikes to crystal-clear mountain lakes, archery sessions, or even volunteering to walk shelter dogs in the countryside. The list is almost endless: as one nomad noted, in Bansko you can do everything from mountain biking and quads to paragliding and even “all-natural river ice bath” sessions in the streams. Yes, you read that right – some brave souls take a forest cold plunge in icy mountain water for the ultimate refresh! If you’ve ever dabbled in Wim Hof-style cold therapy, Bansko’s rivers provide the perfect setting. ❄️🌲
Quick recap: Expect your afternoons to be filled with adventure. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or just game to try something new, you’ll make epic memories. Few conferences offer the chance to discuss remote work strategies in the morning and then be zooming on an ATV or splashing in a river by afternoon! It’s the work-hard-play-hard nomad ethos at its best

Great Restaurants in Bansko for Nomads 🍲
If you ask some travelers, Bulgaria will not be the first place that comes to mind for “country with best food”, but Bansko seems to ignore this fact: we always had delicious food during the Nomad Fest, as Bansko’s food scene punches above its weight.
Despite being a small town, Bansko offers a delightful mix of traditional Bulgarian eateries and international fare, much of it shaped by the nomad and expat community that lives here. Nomads often gather in the evenings to break bread together, sharing stories over local wine or craft beer. Here are some great restaurants in Bansko that we tried ourselves (and nomads absolutely love), each with a unique vibe and delicious food:
- 1. Momnini Dwori – Restaurant
To experience Bulgarian cuisine and hospitality, this is a must-visit. The atmosphere is cozy and authentic – think wooden beams, a crackling fireplace in winter, and a flower-laden garden in summer.
The menu is full of local classics: hearty banitsa pastries, shopska salad with tomatoes and feta, grilled meats, and warming stews in hot pots. Don’t miss the lyutenitsa – a homemade roasted pepper and tomato spread that they serve with bread – it’s a local specialty and highly recommended. Cherry on top? It’s basically in the main square so it’s perfect for the lunch break. - Momnini is full? Check Chevermeto (Механа “Чевермето”) and prepare to feast. Great for groups to share big plates all together.
- 2. Five M (Fusion Food & Hot Stone Grill): Five M is a modern spot known for its fusion of international and Bulgarian cuisine. What makes it really stand out (and super fun) is that you can **cook your own meats on a hot volcanic stone right at your table! It’s an interactive dining experience that inevitably leads to laughter and great Instagram stories.
Grill up some steak or veggies to your liking, or order from their menu of Bulgarian-meets-global dishes – one table might be feasting on traditional kebapche (grilled minced meat) while the next enjoys a curry or pasta. It’s also a bit of a wine haven: Five M doubles as a wine bar, offering excellent Bulgarian wines (which are surprisingly world-class) and selections from around the world. This is the place to go for a fun dinner with friends, where you want something a little different. Pro tip: save room for dessert – their interpretations of Bulgarian sweets with a twist are delightful. - 3. The House: this is a beloved Bansko gem in the gondola area that effortlessly blends rustic charm with a lively, welcoming atmosphere. Housed in a striking log cabin adorned with wood carvings, it offers both cozy indoor seating and a serene garden area for al fresco dining. Many meetups happened here (we hosted a retreat founder’s night ourselves!)
The menu is a delightful fusion of traditional Bulgarian fare and international favorites, featuring standout dishes like succulent pork ribs, sizzling pork medallions, and the visually impressive “volcano” bread bowl, the Bohcha, brimming with savory fillings. Tip: the bread IS the plate, so don’t cut it!
Live music performances add to the vibrant ambiance, making it a perfect spot for both intimate dinners and group gatherings. With its generous portions, attentive service, and warm, festive environment, The House promises a dining experience that’s both memorable and satisfying.
You’ll likely end up here for a group dinner or post-fest party night, bonding over barbeque and beers. 🍻
The literal hidden gems:
- Le Petit Nicolas: Tucked away on a quiet side street just a few minutes from the main square, Le Petit Nicolas is the kind of place you stumble upon and immediately want to keep as your little secret. In the morning, the aroma of freshly baked croissants wafts through the air – buttery, flaky, and absolutely worth waking up for. It’s also a perfect stop for a light lunch: their quick, made-to-order sandwiches hit the spot without slowing you down for the rest of the day. Bonus: you won’t need to trek uphill like you do for many other cafés. It’s central, cozy, and undeniably charming – a small slice of French delight in the heart of Bansko.
- cool Pub: shhhh, despite the name, cool Pub isn’t really a pub – and that’s what makes it so special. Think of it more like a no-frills Bulgarian family-owned canteen serving hearty, home-cooked meals at prices that make you double-check the bill (yes, that lunch really cost under €5). It’s a go-to option when you’re hanging out near the city park during Nomad Fest and need something fast, filling, and local. Prepare to dust off your Bulgarian words, (or just point at the glass) and expect grilled meats, fresh salads, stews, and fries – simple, tasty, and satisfying. The staff is friendly, the crowd is low-key, and the vibe is totally unpretentious. If you know, you know. 😉
Honorable mentions: Best burger in town? 75’s Tasty. Do you still have energy after a whole day out? Just walk by Pirin 75 and you’ll find nomads with beers in one hand hanging out late (or even blocking the entire street…). Wanna dance? Contrabar is your spot.
Where to eat Vegan or Vegetarian in Bansko?
Well, traditional Bulgarian cuisine is mostly meat and cheese based, but you will find dedicated options and fabulous grilled veggies. Lubanitza and Station Bansko are the places to check for the cow huggers 💚.
In Bansko, eating out is not just about food – it’s about community. There are plenty of occasions to join group lunches and dinners: nomads often organize them in the fest’s chat or app (“Pizza night at The Station!” or “Traditional food tonight, come along!”). These shared meals often become the backdrop for deep conversations, new friendships, or planning tomorrow’s adventures. By the end of the week, you’ll have a list of favorite dishes from all over the world – and possibly a slightly tighter waistband (worth it!). Enjoy the culinary journey. 🍽️
Wellness & Nature Spots to Recharge 🌳🧘
Amid all the excitement, Bansko Nomad Fest also weaves in plenty of wellness and nature, recognizing that a healthy nomad is a happy nomad. The setting itself – clean mountain air, spring water, and stunning nature – does half the job. But you’ll also have dedicated opportunities to relax, rejuvenate, and reconnect with yourself and nature. Here are three wellness and nature experiences not to miss:
- 1. Hot Springs & Spa Time: One of Bansko’s greatest perks is its proximity to natural hot springs. In fact, Bulgaria is second only to Iceland in Europe for the sheer number of hot springs it has, and the nearby village of Banya (5 km away) boasts 27 different mineral springs. Fest organizers often arrange an outing to Banya’s hot spring pools – imagine soaking in steaming thermal water under the open sky with stunning peaks on the horizon (yes, it’s as magical as it sounds).
In previous years, there’s even been a hot springs pool party – a fun twist where nomads relax in geothermal pools with music and drinks, turning wellness into a (very) social event. If you prefer a quieter vibe, you can visit hot spring resorts like Seven Springs or Hot Springs Medical & Spa Hotel in small groups or on your own. Most places have outdoor and indoor pools, jacuzzi, sauna, etc. It’s incredibly rejuvenating to let the mineral-rich warm water melt away your muscle aches from all that adventuring. A couple of hours in a thermal spa will leave you refreshed and ready for the next day’s activities. Don’t forget a bathing suit – and perhaps flip-flops and a towel if the venue doesn’t provide them. - 2. Forest Walks & Cold Plunges: Sometimes the simplest nature experiences are the most profound. Bansko is surrounded by forests, rivers, and hiking trails where you can take a peaceful walk among ancient pine trees. You might stumble upon a crystal-clear stream gurgling down from the mountains – the perfect spot to try a forest cold plunge if you’re feeling adventurous! Many health-conscious nomads swear by cold immersion for an endorphin rush and mental reset. The Pirin mountain rivers offer all-natural ice bath opportunities.
It takes some courage to dip into chilly waters (even in summer, stream water can be ~10°C), but it’s incredibly invigorating. Usually, a few brave souls will organize a morning cold plunge ritual – often preceded by breathwork or yoga to get centered.
Picture standing in a secluded woodland, breathing deeply, then immersing yourself in pure, cold alpine water – you emerge tingling, with every cell alive and a huge smile on your face. Even if cold plunges aren’t your thing, those forest walks to the river are peaceful enough. Bansko’s nature has a calming effect; a short hike can double as meditation.
Popular easy trails lead to places like the Holy Trinity Church forest path or along the river by the old town. It’s a beautiful way to start your day before diving into festival activities, or to unwind at sunset with birds chirping around you. 🌲💦 - 3. Yoga, Meditation & Wellness Workshops: At Bansko Nomad Fest, wellness is also built into the program. Each morning typically begins with optional wellness sessions: outdoor yoga in the park, guided meditation, or breathwork classes led by fellow nomads. There’s nothing quite like doing sun salutations in the crisp morning air with greenery all around and a group of like-minded people stretching beside you. These sessions are great for grounding yourself and shaking off any grogginess from the late-night parties. In 2023, participants enjoyed yoga classes under the trees in the town park (the same park hosts some unconference talks later in the day) – a serene start focusing on balance and mindfulness, which carries a positive tone into the rest of your day. 🧘♀️
In addition to yoga, keep an eye out for special wellness workshops: past fests have featured things like laughter therapy sessions, nutrition talks, and even a sound healing evening with crystal bowls. And if you need some me-time, consider visiting one of the local spa centers in town. Bansko has a few hotels with spa facilities (steam bath, sauna, massage) open to visitors for a fee. For example, the Gardenia Hotel’s spa or Kempinski Hotel’s world-class spa (if you’re near the gondola area) are great places to pamper yourself.
Balance is key: Bansko Nomad Fest encourages you not just to network and learn, but also to take care of your well-being. By the end of the week, many attendees report feeling healthier and more energized than when they arrived – it’s the combination of mountain energy, physical activity, and mindful relaxation.
In short, expect to rejuvenate both body and mind. Whether you’re soaking in mineral waters, plunging into a cool river, or simply sipping herbal tea on a terrace with a mountain view, Bansko provides the ideal natural backdrop for wellness. It’s a reminder that the nomad life is, yes, some hustle, but it’s about creating a lifestyle that nourishes you. And at Bansko Nomad Fest, you’ll have plenty of chances to do exactly that.
Is Bansko Nomad Fest Worth It? 🤔
After hearing about all these experiences, you might be wondering: “Is Bansko Nomad Fest worth it?” The answer from those who’ve been is a resounding YES! 🙌 In an attendee survey and countless personal blogs, nomads rave about the fest’s unique blend of professional value and personal joy. Here’s why it’s worth every bit:
- Community & Connection: Nowhere else will you find such a concentration of like-minded people who instantly “get” you. Imagine a community spirit where making friends is effortless – over 700 nomads attended in 2023, many returning every year. By day two, you’ll have a circle of friends to lunch with, adventure with, and collaborate with. The serendipitous encounters (chatting with a founder of a startup in the coffee line, or brainstorming with a travel blogger on a hike) are invaluable. Attendees describe the vibe as open, friendly, and inspiring. If you’ve been craving a sense of belonging in the nomad world, you’ll find it here in spades.
- Knowledge & Inspiration: The fest features 50+ talks and workshops by expert speakers and fellow nomads on everything from scaling an online business to mindful travel. You’ll learn practical strategies for remote work success and hear authentic stories of others’ journeys.
But beyond scheduled content, the informal knowledge sharing is where the magic often happens – late-night discussions about life around a firepit, skill-sharing sessions during coworking hours, and the community-organized un-conferences: these are as central as the morning conference talks, and it’s where the discussion moves to an eye-level exchange between a very interesting bunch of people. Never underestimate the inspiration and life stories you can get among nomads!
Many attendees leave with fresh business ideas, solutions to nomad life challenges, or even new career opportunities. It’s essentially a one-week infusion of wisdom and motivation that can truly be life changing. Not to mention, if you’re new to nomading, this event can be the launchpad that gives you confidence to pursue this path (yes, aspiring nomads are absolutely welcome to Bansko Nomad Fest and are an integral part of it!). - Adventure & Fun: Let’s face it, one reason you became a digital nomad was probably to live life fully. Bansko Nomad Fest delivers that in abundance. By the end of the week, your camera roll will be full of epic memories: you conquering a mountain trail, dancing your heart out at the closing party, clinking glasses at a rooftop meetup, and maybe wearing a goofy costume at one of the theme nights (did we mention there are theme parties? There are!). The festival is carefully organized to include social events every evening – from a traditional Bulgarian dance night in the square to a high-energy nightclub party – so the fun never stops. And because Bansko is super affordable (a beer is ~$2 and a nice meal under $10), you can enjoy everything without worrying about overspending. Past attendees often say they had the time of their lives and created deep friendships through these shared fun moments.
- Affordability & Accessibility: Speaking of cost, compared to other conferences or retreats, Bansko Nomad Fest is very reasonably priced. The ticket price (usually a few hundred Euros for the week) gives you access to most talks, events, and a selection of free activities – a huge value for the money.
Accommodation in Bansko is cheap (as you saw, even hotels are €20-40/night range), and food is inexpensive yet high quality. This means attending the fest won’t break the bank, even for budget-conscious travelers. Also, Bulgaria is easy to visit visa-wise (EU citizens have free movement, and many others get 90 days visa-free). Simply put, it’s worth it because you get a rich experience without a hefty price tag.
Now, let’s be real for a moment: no event is 100% perfect. Some attendees in the past have given feedback on logistical hiccups – e.g. the occasional schedule change, or a shuttle bus that was a tad overcrowded. But the organizers listen and improve every year. Any minor inconveniences fade in comparison to the overwhelmingly positive experience. The overall sentiment is that the fest’s atmosphere, the vibrant community, and the memories forged far outweigh any small issues.
By the end of the week, as you watch the final slideshow of photos at the closing ceremony (yes, you’ll probably tear up a bit reminiscing everything you did), you’ll likely be thinking “I can’t believe how much was packed into one week – and I can’t wait to come back!”. Many nomads decide on the spot to return the next year, or even linger in Bansko longer because they’ve fallen in love with the town and people. In fact, many nomads now have been Bansko’s residents for many years!
In a nutshell: Bansko Nomad Fest is absolutely worth it for anyone seeking connection, growth, and out-of-the-ordinary experiences. It’s the kind of event where you arrive not knowing a soul and leave with a global family. It reminds us why you chose the unconventional, beautiful path of the digital nomad. So, if you’re on the fence about coming, take this as your sign. Pack your bags, book that ticket, and get ready for a week like truly no other.
